The role

As a software engineer in the data content team at Healx you will use your skills to assemble and integrate data that drives our AI models and scientific decisions. You will join a team of engineers and life science experts building software to parse, transform and store data from a huge variety of sources, helping design and optimise a complex data model. 

You’ll work with cross-disciplinary teams of highly-skilled computational biologists, biocurators, machine learning data scientists, engineers and pharmacologists who are passionate about meeting urgent unmet medical needs through AI-powered drug discovery. 

As a team we are highly collaborative, we value continuous improvement of our work and encourage every member to contribute ideas. We work fully in the cloud, primarily with Python and a NoSQL database.

What you are doing now

You may be working as a Bioinformatician, Software Engineer, Backend Developer or Database Developer and have strong and demonstrable coding skills. We have a wealth of industry knowledge to draw on within the team therefore experience within the Biotech or Life Sciences industry is not essential. 
You'll be:
  • Building production workflows in Python to ingest and expose multiple structured and unstructured data sources
  • Helping to design and implement a complex data model in our NoSql database linking many scientific concepts, data types and ontologies
  • Developing unit and acceptance tests to ensure we maintain high standards of data integrity in a highly automated system
  • Supporting Healx AI drug discovery efforts by ensuring data sources are consistent, up to date and available
  • Working closely with a team in an agile environment, contributing ideas to evolve and improve our process and software development practice
  • Collaborating closely with data engineers, product engineers and bioinformaticians in cross-functional teams to deliver projects
  • We’re looking for someone who has:
  • Significant experience in a similar role (Backend Engineer, Database developer, Software Engineer) 
  • Commercial experience using Python, Java, JavaScript or similar language
  • Accomplished programmer with the ability to follow best practice and improve upon existing software engineering practices
  • Significant experience designing and implementing data models in relational or NoSQL databases
  • Ability to partner and work in a fast-paced, agile and collaborative team environment
  • A strong interest in working with scientific data to enable drug discovery data
  • History of successfully collaborating with internal stakeholders and clarifying requirements
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent analytical skills, in particular, the curiosity to investigate and QC data
  • Thorough knowledge of database design and data structures
  • Strong debugging skills with the ability to easily and quickly read and modify existing code
  • It’s a bonus if you have:
  • Previous experience working with life science data but this is not required
  • Ability to mentor and guide other team members in an agile environment
  • Any experience with ontologies, biomedical data, knowledge graphs or graph databases
  • Some experience of cloud computing (AWS, GCP)
  • Experience with data warehousing solutions

    The Medical Director Clinical Development provides medical leadership to Healx’s programmes, from disease selection, through clinical development and beyond.  The role requires an outstanding individual who is able to think out of the box to make use of Healx’s unique foundation as a technology company in developing innovative clinical programmes.
    Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer, the ideal candidate will be able to work independently, with expertise in rare diseases and an understanding of a broad range of therapeutic areas.
    You’ll be:
  • In collaboration with Pre-clinical, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Commercial, as well as external Advisory Boards, KOLs and consultants, conceptualise and create highly innovative clinical development plans for Healx’s assets.
  • Be the Medical person on the Project Teams.
  • Work with the biocuration team to support evaluation of clinical unmet need and current treatment paradigms for disease selection and key project progression decisions.
  • Provide medical review of external drug repurposing opportunities that come to Healx.
  • Working with Clinical Operations, provide medical input into protocol development and other study documentation for all phases of clinical trials.
  • Together with Regulatory Affairs, write or oversee writing of scientific briefing documents for regulators and regulatory submissions.
  • Together with Market Access, support the development of HEOR strategies to support pricing and reimbursement.
  • Provide medical input into the review of drug repurposing candidates.
  • Provide input into the Target Product Profile for Healx’s disease programmes.
  • Provide medical insight into life-cycle planning.
  • Work with Pharmacology and BD teams to understand the therapeutic landscape of rare disease clusters of interest.
  • Work with the BD team and Finance to build financial models and target product profiles for Healx’s clinical assets.
  • Provide support for business development activities, such as clinical due diligence and research collaborations.
  • Initially, act as Drug Safety Physician for relevant clinical programmes.

  • Substantial experience in a similar role in the biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Rare diseases, particularly rare neurodevelopmental, experience is a significant asset.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory processes and pharmacovigilance requirements.
  • Track record of delivering results.

  • Developing and applying drug matching algorithms to find novel treatments for rare disease
  • Elucidating drug and disease mechanisms of action from Omics and other data sources to assist our pharmacologists in establishing an understanding of why a drug may treat a disease
  • Collaborating extensively with our Preclinical and Clinical Teams to ensure we  develop the best drug matching predictions and pharmacological hypotheses with the greatest probability of success

  • Graduated in a relevant computational systems biology or bioinformatics discipline with experience in applying your skills to improve human health
  • A proven track record of applying pathways enrichment and network analysis methods to investigate drug or disease mechanisms of action
